Repotting

The Potting Goblin

It's not a glow-up--it's just giving your plant room to breathe.

Repotting isn't about aesthetics--it's about function. Over time, soil breaks down, roots get cramped, and bottom watering stops working as well. If water isn't soaking in like it used to, or your plant dries out within a day or two, it might be time to reset.

Signs It's Time To Repot:

  • Water no longer soaks up from the bottom

  • Soil stays soggy or dries out immediately after watering

  • Roots are circling the pot or poking out drainage holes

  • Soil is compacted, crusty, or smells off

  • The plant is top-heavy, tilting, or growing unevenly

  • It's been over a year since it's last repot

Repotting vs Potting Up:

  • Repotting = refreshing the soil (same pot is fine)

  • Potting Up = moving to a slightly larger pot if the plant has out grown the current one

  • Only size up one pot size at a time to avoid excess soil sitting around the roots

Pro Tips:

  • Best time: Spring or early summer, when plants are actively growing

  • Skip the drainage rocks. Just use a well draining mix in a pot with drainage holes

  • Soil matters. We hand-mix our own blend so roots can breathe and water flows through like it should. See our Rebel Notes article on soil mixes.
