What's in Your Pot?

Trash soil = trash roots. Let's fix that.

When people talk about plant care, they usually jump to light and water. But roots? Roots don't care how much sun they're getting if they're trapped in a swamp.
We've seen it too many times: beautiful plants in beautiful pots... sitting in soggy, compacted, lifeless soil straight out of a plastic bag from the clearance bin. No drainage. No texture. No chance.
You wouldn't build your home on a floodplain. So why are your plants living in mud?
What We Use (and Why)
At The Leafy Rebellion Nursery, we hand-mix every batch of soil. It's not just a gimmick--it's the foundation of healthy, thriving plants. Here's what goes in:
High Quality Base Soil
We use FoxFarm Ocean Forest. Rich, fluffy, and packed with organic matter. It gives us a solid starting point without fillers or synthetic junk.
Small Perlite
Keeps the soil loose and airy so roots can breathe.
Chunky (Medium/Large) Perlite
Adds even more airflow, especially for chunky-rooted plants like aroids.
Orchid Bark
Mimics natural debris and breaks down slowly, improving structure and drainage over time.
Bio-Char (Horticultural Charcoal)
Helps regulate moisture, encourages beneficial microbes, and reduces odor and rot risks.
Heads-up: Our mix contains active soil and is available for local sales only. Due to federal regulations, we cannot ship soil. When we are able to offer plants for online purchasing, we'll be introducing a lighter, soil-less blend designed for travel.
How We Use It
We start all our cuttings in water. Once they've got a solid start, and some healthy roots, we pot them directly into this mix--no beginner blend, no weird transitions. Just the real stuff, from the start.
After potting, we give plants time to settle in before we start anything harsher than water, such as fertilizing--usually 4-6 weeks minimum. Young roots need stability, not a nutrient overload.
Why Regular Potting Soil Isn't Enough
Most commercial "indoor plant soil" is made to hold water. Like... too much of it. That might work for a tomato plant in full sun, but your pothos in a north window is going to drown.
It compacts.
It stays wet too long.
It breaks down into sludge
And all of that means sad, stressed roots. Which means sad, stressed plants.
Your houseplants evolved in wild places--jungle canopies, rocky hillsides, forest floors. They want variety, air, and drainage. We build soil to match.
Rebel Tip: Get to Know Your Soil
You don't need a lab test. Just look at what's in your pot:
Does it smell sour?
Can you see any texture--chunks, bark, perlite--or is it just sludge?
Do you plants dry out too slowly or too fast?
Can you see your roots though the pot? (Hint: clear pots make this way easier.)
If something feels off, it probably is. Let your soil tell you what your plant's been living through.
Let's Build Better from the Ground Up
Healthy roots make bold plants. Bold plants make bold homes. It all starts with dirt.
